Love this so much! I love all of these covers, and it's fascinating to read the back stories. I will say, Parwana is gorgeous and I love the recipes and story behind it, but the typeface was a terrible choice; I find it hard to actually read :(

Fascinating piece and gorgeous covers. I loved learning how the elements they choose influence the potential reader/buyer. I have no eye for design myself.

These covers are amazing! A couple of questions though: Is it still common practice for cookbook authors to be required to pay for photography out of their advance? And how much input do they really have in the cover design? From what I’ve heard in the past, the answer was not much.

On both counts I think it depends. Some book deals you pay out of the advance, some have a photography budget on top of the advance. And with cover, I think it depends on who the author is and if they are pushing for a cover that will work from a marketing perspective or not. For example, when I wrote the Austin Cookbook, I knew I didn't want barbecue on the cover, which they honored, but that was about the extent of my input. (Aside from choosing the photographer etc.) I am small potatoes lol.
