Howdy cookbook fans!
Welcome to the only place on the internet I can safely guarantee will not be talking about the democratic primary OR coronavirus today. What we will be talking about: NEW INA GARTEN ON THE WAY!! Plus other stuff. You know, cookbook stuff. As always, if you want to hear from me again on Friday, you can become a paid subscriber for $5/month or $50/year, click below! Great.
Ina Garten’s Modern Comfort Food Coming Oct. 27
Ina Garten’s 12th cookbook is on its way: Modern Comfort Food will be published by Clarkson Potter on October 27. By the numbers! 272 pages. 85 recipes. 7 7/16 inches by 10 inches. ISBN 9780804187060. $35.
According to publisher’s copy, the recipes will be “inspired by childhood favorites–but with the volume turned way up.” Examples include:
Cheddar and Chutney Grilled Cheese
Smashed Hamburgers with Caramelized Onions
Cheesy Chicken Enchiladas
Roasted Sausages, Peppers, and Onions
Boston Cream Pie
Banana Rum Trifle
Black and White Cookies
In a year when a lot of cookbooks are being released in the summer, La Contessa is coming out with a comfort food cookbook…a week before the election. (I said we wouldn’t talk about the primary, not the election.) If anyone can pull it off, though, she can. Get pumped.
(In other Ina news, she did indeed index all 11 existing books, as per the tweet above. The recipes are searchable here.)
Simon & Schuster for Sale?
According to Publishers Weekly, book publisher Simon & Schuster may be for sale: “ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish said the publishing house is not a core asset and that the company has received interest in the past from companies.” Not much else seems to be known at the moment. Recent S&S cookbook titles include the controversial cookbook Rage Baking and last fall’s new edition of The Joy of Cooking.
New Kid’s Book about Julia Child’s Youth
Alex Prud’homme, author of several books on his great-aunt Julia Child, will write Born Hungry for children’s publisher Calkins Creek. Sarah Green will illustrate. The book will follow Child’s “evolution from a young girl born hungry to one of America's most celebrated chefs and food writers” and I will immediately buy it for every single baby shower I am invited to for the next several years. Spring 2022. [PM]

“The book reflects St. John’s working practices in the kitchen, and our philosophy in terms of cooking, eating and life. The way we work at St. John — seasonally, intuitively, thinking on our feet — is the same as the home cook. This is a book which teaches you to respect your ingredients, and your instincts.” — London chef Fergus Henderson on his upcoming The Book of St. John. [Chicago Tribune]
