Thanks. I think what approach a recipe-writer takes may just feel intuitive (and is probably based a lot on personality) but when you really dig into it, there's so much beneath the surface.

@Cammie your piece made me pull both Twelve Recipes and A Recipe For Cooking off my shelves, this evening, and they are--as you put it--a rich blend of storytelling and cooking know-how. Also, Cal’s writerly voice shines through just the way his California-inflected cooking does. Personality is just as important to his books as it would be to a good novel. 👍

So much of the back-and-forth between my editors and me has been on over-explaining vs under-explaining. It's a tough thing to nail — and readers care!
